Episode II. of “Your Heart & Your Belly & Your Whole Insides Felt Empty & Wanting & Hollow” is part of a trilogy depicting an intimate relationship between a woman and the void. The third episode will be explored later this year.
Episode II. is both a stand alone film and live performance. Audiences enter a studio and find a circular mirrored room with no door in the center of the space. A woman, wearing a steadicam strapped to her body, performs inside the circular mirrored room. Visitors can stand or walk anywhere outside the small 360˚ room and can only see inside the room through small two inch gaps between each mirror panel. These limited glimpses through the gaps contrast the primary focus– a live feed video that is shot from inside the small room and projected against the studio walls outside the mirrored room. My work sample reflects this live feed video projection, which is also the point of view of the steadicam strapped to the performer. The camera movements are strategically manipulated through the performer’s body to demonstrate the choreography through a curated frame. The 360˚ mirrored room both multiplies the performer’s reflection as well as reveals her to be entirely alone. Yet, in the opening scene of Episode 2 there is text read by a performer while I use my foot to manipulate the movements of the steadicam, manufacturing the feeling of “other” in the room.
